Do you need any documents to bring a dog or other pet to Livigno?

Livigno is located in Italy, so when arriving from the Italian side via the Foscagno Pass, there are normally no border checks, not even for dogs or other pets.

For those arriving in Livigno and staying exclusively within Italian territory, there are normally no particular issues. In Italy, dogs must be identified with a microchip, and it is always advisable to carry the animal’s health record with up-to-date vaccinations, especially during a typical tourist trip.

During the summer, some visitors reach Livigno via Switzerland, for example through the Forcola di Livigno, a scenic road generally open only during the summer season.

Others, however, arrive year-round via Switzerland through the Munt La Schera Tunnel, often used by those coming from the Bolzano and Merano areas or from Northern Europe via the Ofen Pass (Passo del Forno).

In these cases, you are crossing an international border. To enter Switzerland with a dog, you must have a microchip, a valid rabies vaccination, and a European pet passport.

In practice, checks on pets are quite rare, and many people simply travel with the animal’s up-to-date health record, but having the European pet passport as well helps avoid potential problems in case of inspections or special situations.

Having your dog properly identified and with up-to-date health documentation can also be useful in unexpected situations during a vacation, such as if the animal gets lost, during veterinary checks, or in the event of minor accidents.

Many people on vacation in Livigno also decide to visit the Engadine or take a ride on the Bernina Express with their dog, perhaps on a day of bad weather. Not having the pet’s documents with you can therefore limit your options for any excursions into Switzerland.
