Do I need an ID card to visit Livigno?

Livigno is in Italy, so when arriving from the Foscagno Pass, there are normally no border controls and you do not leave the country.

If you are traveling from Switzerland, for example via Forcola or the Munt La Schera Tunnel, it is recommended that both adults and children carry a valid ID.

Livigno is located on Italian territory, so when arriving from the Italian side via the Foscagno Pass, there are normally no border controls and you do not leave the country.

During the summer, some visitors reach Livigno via Switzerland, for example through the Forcola di Livigno, a scenic road that is generally open only during the summer season.

Others, however, arrive year-round via Switzerland through the Munt La Schera Tunnel, often used by those coming from the Bolzano and Merano areas or from Northern Europe via the Ofen Pass (Passo del Forno).

In these cases, you are crossing an international border, so it is recommended that you carry a valid ID, for both adults and children.

Furthermore, during a vacation in Livigno, it is not uncommon to visit the Engadine or take a trip on the Bernina Express. Not having an ID with you can therefore limit your options for any excursions in the surrounding areas of Switzerland.

In general, however, it is always advisable to travel with an ID card or passport, not only to enter Switzerland, but also for hotels, emergencies, or any checks during the trip.
