Every September, there is a moment when the streets of Livigno once again fill with cowbells, animals, flowers and traditional clothing. This is Alpenfest, the celebration that marks the return of livestock after a summer spent grazing on the high mountain pastures. It is more than an event staged for visitors. Its origins lie in a practical moment in Alpine farming life: the end of the grazing season and the animals’ journey back to the village and their barns.

The return from the mountain pastures During summer, livestock are taken up to the high pastures to graze on Alpine grass. When autumn approaches, they descend towards the village again. For generations, this passage has shaped the annual rhythm of farming families. Alpenfest turns the homecoming into a celebration: animals are adorned with flowers, branches, ribbons and large bells, then parade through the streets with their farmers.
